The 1997 Kooky Zoo PEZ Dispenser Set Is the Colorful Animal Kingdom Every Collector Needs
Today I am looking at the 1997 Kooky Zoo PEZ Dispenser, one of the most playful and visually striking animal character sets PEZ ever released. These whimsical zoo creatures brought pure joy to collectors in the late 1990s and remain beloved classics in any serious PEZ collection.
A Complete Zoo in Your Collection
Released in 1997, the Kooky Zoo set included Hippo, Crocodile, Lion (sometimes called David Lion), Elephant, and Blinky Bill, an Australian character making a crossover into the PEZ universe. Each dispenser featured bold, bright character sculpting with expressive painted eyes and mouth details that capture the playful personality of each animal. The neon-colored stems add vibrant pops of color that make these dispensers stand out on any shelf.
The Crystal Edition Rarity
While the standard Kooky Zoo set is fantastic, PEZ also released a limited Crystal Kooky Zoo edition as Offer #70. These crystal-clear versions rode atop neon stems and were distributed exclusively through PEZ direct offers-never sold in retail stores. The crystal Gator, Elephant, Hippo, and Lion from this special series are significantly harder to find and command collector attention.
Kooky Zoo dispensers remind me that collecting doesn't have to be serious. Sometimes the joy is in celebrating pure silliness-four-eyed hippos and grumpy lions that somehow brighten your day just by existing.
Display Value and Nostalgia
I have a pair of Kooky Zoo dispensers in my own collection-one standard set and a partial crystal set I've been hunting to complete. They're perfect for creating a themed shelf dedicated to 1990s animal characters. The bright colors and playful sculpting make them conversation starters, and younger collectors often gravitate to these charming designs when starting their own collections. I marked mine in the Collectiblz app to track what I have and what I still need to hunt for.
Collector Appeal
Whether you're building a comprehensive 1990s PEZ collection or focusing specifically on animal characters, Kooky Zoo pieces are accessible at reasonable prices for standard versions, while crystal variants present a fun hunting challenge. The set's whimsy and color make it essential for collectors who appreciate the fun side of PEZ.
Have you collected Kooky Zoo? Which animal is your favorite from the set?
