Minions Gru TUBBZ Review - The Villainous Mastermind Duck
Gorls, Minions, and Moonlight! 🦆🌙
Let's talk about one of animation's most lovable supervillains turned super-dad. The Gru Tubbz from Numskull Designs brings Illumination Entertainment's iconic character to your collection in full rubber duck glory. This is the mastermind behind the moon heist, the adoptive father to Margo, Edith, and Agnes, and the undisputed commander of a banana-loving army, now transformed into the perfect desk companion.
Sculpt and Design Details
This Tubbz captures Gru's signature look with impressive attention to detail. The sculpt perfectly replicates his distinctive silhouette, that impossibly long scarf that defies all laws of physics, and his iconic pointy nose. The duck form doesn't compromise Gru's recognizable features. You'll spot his trademark black and gray striped scarf draped around the duck's body, and his dark outfit is faithfully recreated in miniature rubber form.
The facial expression is spot-on, capturing that stern yet secretly soft-hearted look that made us all fall in love with this character. His eyebrows are sculpted to show that perpetual look of mild annoyance mixed with determination. The attention to his distinctive hairstyle, or lack thereof, is handled brilliantly, maintaining his smooth-headed appearance that's become so recognizable.
Paint Application and Colors
The color palette stays true to Gru's look from the films. Deep blacks and grays dominate, with clean lines separating the scarf stripes. The paint application is crisp, with no bleeding between colors. His skin tone is rendered in a soft peachy hue that contrasts beautifully with the darker clothing elements. The eyes are painted with precision, capturing that calculating yet caring gaze that defines the character.
Display and Presence
Standing at the standard Tubbz height, this Gru duck has substantial shelf presence. The elongated scarf adds visual interest and helps this piece stand out in any collection. Whether you're displaying him solo or building out your Minions collection with Kevin, Bob, and the rest of the crew, Gru commands attention. He's the perfect centerpiece for any Despicable Me or Illumination-themed display.
The balance is excellent. Despite the top-heavy scarf detail, Gru sits stable on any flat surface. I've had him perched on my monitor stand, and he hasn't budged once, even when I'm frantically typing during deadline crunches.
A Personal Connection to Villainy
I still remember watching the first Despicable Me in theaters back in 2010. I went in expecting a silly kids' movie about a villain with a funny accent, and I left having experienced one of the most heartwarming stories about family, redemption, and the power of love. "It's so fluffy I'm gonna die!" became an instant catchphrase in my household, and Gru's transformation from villain to devoted dad hit differently than I expected. That movie taught me that sometimes the best heroes are reformed villains who just needed the right motivation.
Gru's character arc across the films has been remarkable. From stealing the moon to fighting supervillains to save his family, he's proven that "I will stuff you all in the crust!" is both a threat and a promise when it comes to protecting the people he loves.
Collector's Notes
This Gru Tubbz is part of the Minions Boxed TUBBZ line, which means premium packaging perfect for mint-in-box collectors. If you're building the complete Despicable Me collection, you'll want to pair Gru with King Bob and Kevin with Fart Blaster. The trio makes for an absolutely delightful display that captures the chaotic energy of the franchise.
For Illumination fans, this piece bridges beautifully with other movie franchises in the Tubbz lineup. Display him near your Shrek ducks for a fun Universal Studios animation corner, or create a villains-turned-heroes shelf alongside other reformed bad guys from your collection.
I actually tracked down this Gru duck at a pop culture shop I don't usually visit while traveling for a convention last month. The moment I spotted that distinctive scarf through the display case, I knew he was coming home with me. I've got him marked in my Collectiblz app, and it's so satisfying seeing that little checkmark next to his name. If you're serious about tracking your Tubbz collection, I highly recommend using the app to keep tabs on which ducks you own and which ones are still on your wish list.
Why This Duck Works
The Gru Tubbz succeeds because it doesn't just replicate the character, it captures his essence. The slightly stern expression, the iconic outfit, the overall vibe of "reformed supervillain who secretly loves his kids more than anything" all comes through in this small rubber form. It's both adorable and faithful to the source material.
For fans of the Despicable Me franchise, this is an essential piece. For Tubbz collectors, it's a fun addition that brings personality and character to any display. For anyone who's ever wanted to shrink-ray something just to see what would happen, well, here's your duck.
Final Thoughts
The Minions Gru TUBBZ is a quack-tastic celebration of one of modern animation's most beloved characters. Whether you're a completionist collector building the full Minions set, a Despicable Me superfan, or someone who just appreciates a well-designed rubber duck, Gru deserves a spot in your collection. Display him on your desk as a reminder that even villains can become heroes when they find something worth fighting for. Plus, he pairs perfectly with a freeze ray replica if you happen to have one lying around.
