McDonald's Happy Meal Mr Men & Little Miss Cups - Little Miss Sunshine 2021
Welcome Back to the Drive-Thru, Fellow Collectors!
Pull up a seat and grab your favorite dipping sauce, because today we are diving into one of the most cheerful Happy Meal releases in recent memory - the 2021 McDonald's Mr Men & Little Miss Cups wave, and specifically shining the spotlight on Little Miss Sunshine. This bright yellow character has been a beloved fixture in the Roger Hargreaves universe for decades, and seeing her land in a McDonald's Happy Meal in cup form was genuinely exciting. This is one of those promotions that reminds you just how wide the world of Kids' Meal collectibles really reaches.
About the Little Miss Sunshine Cup
The Mr Men & Little Miss Cups set released by McDonald's in 2021 takes a fun and functional approach to the promo toy format. Rather than a traditional figure or playable toy, each piece in this wave is a small, shaped character cup - designed to hold drinks and double as a display piece. Little Miss Sunshine is rendered in her classic round, sunshine-yellow form, with her signature wide smile and simple, boldly graphic styling that mirrors the iconic original illustrations.
The cup itself is sized appropriately for younger hands, with a lightweight plastic construction that feels solid without being heavy. The molded shape captures Little Miss Sunshine's perfectly circular silhouette cleanly, and the yellow hue is bright and consistent throughout. Paint apps are minimal by design - this is very much a molded-color piece that leans into the simple, graphic aesthetic of the original character art. The overall finish is smooth and durable, with no sharp edges or small removable parts, which makes it both kid-safe and display-friendly.
The character detailing on the face is crisply rendered - her smile carries the same warmth and joy that has made Little Miss Sunshine one of the most recognizable characters in the entire Mr Men series. There is something genuinely appealing about how closely the cup captures that simple but iconic look without overcomplicating it.
When a character has been beloved for over 50 years with almost no design changes, the best thing a promo piece can do is stay faithful to the source material - and this Little Miss Sunshine cup does exactly that. No redesign, no reimagining. Just the original, in Happy Meal form.
The Full Mr Men & Little Miss Cups 2021 Set
Little Miss Sunshine is one of several character cups in this 2021 wave. The full assortment spotted across the set includes Mr Bump, Mr Tickle, Mr Strong, and Mr Happy alongside her. Each cup follows the same format - shaped character body as the cup, with the character's distinctive color and face front and center. If you are building out this set, you are looking at a range of colors and character personalities that make a visually striking display when grouped together.
Mr Bump's cool blue, Mr Tickle's orange stretch, Mr Strong's bold red, and Mr Happy's beaming yellow-green all hold up beautifully as a lineup. Little Miss Sunshine's sunny yellow rounds out the group with excellent contrast. As a thematic set, this wave is well-balanced - it covers a range of beloved characters from both the Mr Men and Little Miss sides of the franchise, giving the assortment a wider appeal across ages and preferences.
Collector Notes
For adult collectors, the Mr Men & Little Miss Cups set sits in an interesting category. These are not traditional figures, but the character sculpts are faithful and the cups hold up well for shelf display. The functional cup format does mean that condition matters more than usual - look for pieces with clean, unscratched surfaces and tight lids if they were originally included. A complete set of all five characters displayed together makes a compact, colorful, and immediately recognizable grouping.
From a durability standpoint, the plastic feels appropriately sturdy for the price point, and the bright molded colors should hold up well over time without significant fading when kept out of direct sunlight. For kids, these are genuinely usable toys with play value beyond just display - the cup format means they actually get used, which is both charming and a reminder that condition on secondary market examples can vary quite a bit.
The Mr Men & Little Miss IP has a long, warm history with collectors who grew up with the books, and the 2021 McDonald's collaboration taps into that nostalgia cleanly. Little Miss Sunshine in particular is one of the more universally recognized characters in the lineup, which makes her one of the more sought-after pieces in this wave.
Display and Storage Ideas
For display, the cup format lends itself naturally to shelf groupings. Line all five cups up by color - blue, orange, red, yellow-green, and yellow - and you have an instant eye-catching shelf moment. A small dedicated shelf riser or a narrow floating shelf works beautifully here. Because these are cups, they also stack neatly for storage if space is an issue, though displaying them upright is the better choice for visibility.
Grouping by McDonald's promo year works especially well with the broader Mr Men collection, since there have been multiple waves over the years across different regions. The 2021 cup set reads immediately as a distinct category within the Mr Men Happy Meal history.
I have Little Miss Sunshine on my need list in the Collectiblz app - she is one of those pieces that keeps slipping through my fingers at the right moment. If you are tracking your own Happy Meal collection, the app makes it simple to log what you have and keep an eye out for what you still need.
