McDonald's Happy Meal POG 2019 - Marvin Expedition Spinning Top

Welcome to Another Spin Through the Golden Arches!
If you were collecting Kids' Meal toys in 2019 and you happened to be in Europe, you may already know that McDonald's ran one of the most disc-happy promotions of the year - the POG 2019 wave. It was a sprawling, colorful set of spinning tops and POG-style collectible discs, and it pulled heavily from two beloved pop culture worlds: the Looney Tunes universe and DC Super Hero Girls. Today I'm taking a closer look at one specific piece from that set: the Marvin Expedition spinning top, one of three Marvin the Martian-themed tops in the POG 2019 lineup.
The POG 2019 Set - A Quick Overview
The McDonald's Happy Meal POG 2019 promotion was a notably large assortment that ran in France and other European markets. Rather than traditional figurines, this wave leaned into the retro-adjacent world of spinning tops and collectible POG discs. The set split its focus between Looney Tunes characters - Tweety, Sylvester, Taz, Bugs Bunny, Road Runner, Wile E. Coyote, Scooby-Doo, and yes, Marvin the Martian - and an extensive run of DC Super Hero Girls-themed numbered POG discs.
The Looney Tunes side of the promotion gave collectors multiple versions of some characters. Marvin the Martian, in particular, got three distinct spinning tops: Marvin Laser, Marvin Music, and Marvin Expedition. Each one captures a slightly different pose or themed moment for the character, making this a natural three-piece micro-set within a larger set. Completing all three Marvin tops is one of the quieter completionist goals hidden inside the POG 2019 wave.
Marvin Expedition - The Toy Itself
The Marvin Expedition spinning top sits at the compact end of the Happy Meal toy scale - roughly the size of a standard POG kini launcher, designed to spin freely on a flat surface. The plastic construction is typical of European Happy Meal promo tops from this era: lightweight, sturdy enough for the hands of younger kids, and colorful enough to catch an adult collector's eye on a display shelf.
Marvin the Martian appears here in what the expedition theme suggests - an adventurous, slightly action-oriented pose that plays up his space explorer identity. The sculpt work is sharp enough for a toy in this price and size tier. The molded color is clean, the proportions feel on-model for Marvin, and there is no loose paint application to speak of - most of the color definition comes from the molding itself rather than brush-on paint, which actually helps long-term durability and keeps these tops looking fresh even years after the promo ended.
The base of the top has the spinning peg that any POG kini player would recognize. It's functional, not just decorative - you can absolutely spin this one. That dual-purpose design (collectible display piece and actual playable toy) is part of what made the POG 2019 wave appealing across age groups.
The three Marvin tops in the POG 2019 set are a small reminder of why character variants matter in Kids' Meal collecting. Each one tells a slightly different story about the character, and together they make a set worth hunting down on its own terms - even inside a much larger promotion.
Collector Notes
From a display perspective, the POG 2019 Marvin tops work beautifully grouped together. Marvin Laser, Marvin Music, and Marvin Expedition all share similar proportions and styling, so they create a visually cohesive mini-set. Displayed together on a small shelf section or in a flat shadow box alongside the POG discs from the same wave, they give a satisfying sense of completeness.
As standalone pieces, each Marvin top is compact and easy to store without taking up much real estate in a collection. They display well on thin acrylic stands or in small divided compartment trays. For those who organize by franchise, grouping all three Marvin tops together and then branching out to the wider Looney Tunes portion of the set - Tweety, Sylvester, Taz, Bugs, Road Runner, Wile E. Coyote, Scooby-Doo - gives a great visual spread of the full character range the POG 2019 promo covered.
Play value is modest but genuine. Kids can spin these, and they hold up to that use without cracking or chipping. For adult collectors, display value is the primary appeal. These are not highly articulated figures, but they do not need to be - their charm is in the character art, the Looney Tunes nostalgia factor, and the completionist satisfaction of tracking them all down.
The POG 2019 set as a whole is worth keeping an eye on as a complete wave. The sheer number of pieces - dozens of numbered DC Super Hero Girls discs plus a full Looney Tunes spinning top lineup - makes it one of the more ambitious European Happy Meal promos from that year. The Marvin Expedition top is a small but meaningful part of that larger picture.
Display and Storage Tips
For the POG 2019 tops specifically, I recommend grouping them by character on a small display shelf or in a divided acrylic case. The spinning tops are relatively uniform in size, so they line up neatly. The DC Super Hero Girls numbered discs from the same wave can be stored in flat disc sleeves or displayed vertically in a thin standing organizer - similar to how vinyl record collectors display their pieces. Mixing the tops and discs on the same shelf by franchise ties the whole promo together visually and tells the story of the full wave at a glance.
The Marvin Expedition top has been on my need list for a while - it is the last of the three Marvin pieces I am still tracking down to complete that mini-set. I have it marked in the Collectiblz app, and if you are working on your own POG 2019 run, the app is genuinely useful for tracking which pieces you have and which ones you still need across a wave this large.
