The 1972 Make A Face on Card PEZ Dispenser Is the Rarest Recalled Grail Every Vintage Collector Dreams of Finding

The PEZ Dispenser That Was Too Fun to Stay on Shelves

If you have spent any real time in the PEZ collecting world, you already know the name. The 1972 Make A Face on Card PEZ Dispenser is not just rare -- it is the one. The white whale. The dispenser that collectors talk about in hushed tones at conventions and spend years hoping to find in the wild. And if you have ever seen one in person, you understand exactly why.

Released in 1972 by PEZ Candy, the Make A Face was unlike anything the brand had produced before. Instead of a single sculpted character head, this dispenser came with a set of tiny interchangeable facial pieces -- eyes, nose, mouth, eyebrows, mustache, and a wig -- that could be mixed and matched Mr. Potato Head-style across a blank face base attached to the standard PEZ stem. The idea was playful and clever, letting kids build their own silly character every time they reached for a piece of candy.

Why It Was Pulled So Quickly

The problem, as you might have already guessed, was those tiny parts. The small facial accessories were simply too small for the children the toy was aimed at, and safety regulators quickly flagged the set as a choking hazard. PEZ pulled the Make A Face from store shelves almost immediately after its debut, which means the production window and total units sold were extremely limited.

When something is gone before most people even knew it existed, that is when collectors start paying close attention. The Make A Face did not get a long shelf life, and that scarcity is exactly what makes it so deeply compelling to those of us who collect vintage PEZ.

Today, the PEZ collecting community estimates that only around 45 examples of the Make A Face on Card are still known to exist. That number alone places it in a completely different category from virtually every other vintage PEZ dispenser. The on-card examples -- meaning still sealed or attached to the original US blister card -- are even rarer and represent the highest tier of PEZ collectibility.

What the On-Card Version Looks Like

The Make A Face on Card presents on a large blister card measuring roughly 10 and three-quarter inches by six and three-quarter inches, with the face pieces and the PEZ stem displayed behind a clear bubble. The stem itself is blue with a 2.62 patent number and a Made in Austria mark, consistent with other early 1970s PEZ production. The face base sits at the top of the stem in place of the usual sculpted head, offering a flat disc with attachment points for each of the interchangeable features.

The full complement of face pieces -- all 17 of them, including the wig -- is what collectors look for in a complete example. Finding one intact on its original card with every piece accounted for is genuinely extraordinary. Many examples that surface at auction are incomplete, and even incomplete examples generate serious collector interest because of how few survive at all.

Display and Collector Context

  • The Make A Face is a 1972 US market release, so it carries the no-feet stem configuration standard for that era
  • On-card examples are the top tier -- loose but complete examples are also highly sought
  • The original blister card is an important part of the display appeal, showing the full face-piece assortment at a glance
  • A natural companion display piece alongside other 1972 releases like the Skull, Sheik, and Alpine dispensers
  • The recalled status means no reissues or modern reprints -- what existed in 1972 is all there is

For vintage PEZ collectors who focus on rare and historically significant pieces, the Make A Face on Card occupies its own shelf entirely. It is the kind of dispenser that anchors a serious collection and tells a story about a moment in time when a clever idea met a swift reality check. Whether you are a longtime PEZ Pal or just starting to explore the deeper end of vintage collecting, this is the one dispenser whose story you need to know.

If you come across one at a show or in an estate collection, you will recognize it. And you will understand why every serious collector stops and stares.
