LEGO SpongeBob Minifigure bob036: The Blue Lei Party Sponge

Well hey there, brick fam! Big news dropped from LEGO this week that had me digging back through my SpongeBob bin, so today felt like the right day to shine a light on an old favorite from Bikini Bottom.
LEGO just unveiled a massive new LEGO Icons SpongeBob SquarePants: Bikini Bottom set, a 1,794 piece build for ages 18 and up with fully furnished interiors for SpongeBob's pineapple, Squidward's house, and Patrick's rock, landing on shelves September 1. It is the first time LEGO has revisited the SpongeBob theme in years, and it has me appreciating the original run all over again, starting with the LEGO SpongeBob Minifigure bob036, the blue lei version of SpongeBob himself from back in 2012.
Who is bob036?
bob036 comes from set 3818 Bikini Bottom Undersea Party, a small Hawaiian luau themed set that also introduced bob035, bob037, and bob038 as recolor and expression variants of the same core figure. This particular version wears a printed blue lei over his usual white torso, with SpongeBob's signature square yellow head, buck teeth, and a permanently delighted expression printed on both sides so you can pose him mid laugh no matter which way he is turned.
What makes the print work
The genius of the classic SpongeBob minifigs is how much personality LEGO squeezed onto that small square head. bob036 keeps the wide eyes and gap toothed grin fans know from the show, and the printed lei gives him a party ready look that stands apart from the plainer SpongeBob figures released in later waves. He was never part of a Collectible Minifigures series, so he only ever came packaged inside SpongeBob themed sets, which keeps the supply tighter than you would expect for a character this recognizable.
The double sided head print is the detail I always point out to people who think LEGO minifigs are just yellow blocks with a face slapped on. Turn bob036 around and he is still smiling at you. That is thoughtful design on a figure smaller than your thumbnail.
Collector notes
Because the original SpongeBob theme only ran from 2006 to 2012 before going dormant, figures like bob036 have quietly become harder to find loose and complete. Secondary market prices stay modest compared to licensed figures from bigger franchises, but with LEGO reviving the theme this fall I would not be surprised if interest in these older Bikini Bottom figures starts to climb. BrickLink is a solid place to confirm exact print variations and see how many sets a given code appeared in, though I always point people to eBay when it is time to actually track one down.
Displaying him
A single SpongeBob figure is fun on a shelf, but bob036 really sings next to his 3818 castmates, or lined up along a Bikini Bottom diorama built from tan and sand green plates for the ocean floor. Once the new Icons set is out I can already picture builders pairing this little guy with the brick built Gary and DoodleBob for a full generational Bikini Bottom lineup, old figure and new build sharing the same shelf.
I do not have bob036 in my own collection yet, and with LEGO putting SpongeBob back in the spotlight I would love to track one down before prices creep up. I added him to my needs list in the Collectiblz app, so if anyone out there has a spare, my needs list is public.
