Taylor Fritz's Basel Semifinal Run Fuels the 2024 Topps Chrome Tennis Aqua Refractor #82

Taylor Fritz's Basel Semifinal Run Fuels the 2024 Topps Chrome Tennis Aqua Refractor #82

Indoor Hard Courts, Big Stakes

Nothing gets me reaching for the card binder like a good indoor hard court run, and Taylor Fritz just gave tennis fans one to watch this week at the Swiss Indoors in Basel. I've got my coffee, my rackets are still leaning in the garage from Tuesday night league, and I am parked in front of this card thinking about how fast the ATP 500 level has been treating him lately.

The Card

Today I am looking at the 2024 Topps Chrome Tennis Taylor Fritz Aqua Refractor, card #82 out of the Base Set, numbered 034 out of 399. Topps Chrome Tennis launched as the hobby's first true chrome tennis release, and this parallel shows exactly why collectors chased it so hard at the time. The aqua-tinted refractor coating runs diagonal across the surface, catching light in cool teal and gold streaks over an action shot of Fritz mid-split-step, racket cocked and eyes locked on the ball. The serial number sits in gold foil along the bottom left corner, with the Topps Chrome wordmark anchoring the nameplate in matching gold.

Why Fritz Is Having a Moment

Fritz advanced to the Basel semifinals this week after Arthur Fils was forced to retire from their quarterfinal with a lower back issue. Fritz was already up 6-2, 2-0 through 45 minutes when Fils, who had taken a medical timeout earlier at 5-2, called it. That sends Fritz through to face Valentin Vacherot, who got past Holger Rune 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 in the other quarterfinal.

  • Fritz is now 16-3 at ATP 500 events in 2026
  • This is his fourth semifinal in five ATP 500 tournaments this season, joining runs in Dallas, Halle, and Washington
  • A Basel final would push him up the PIF ATP Live Race to Turin standings, from 12th into the top 10
There is something about a player who shows up at the 500 level over and over, not just the majors, that tells you his game is in a genuinely good stretch right now. Consistency like that is exactly what makes a card like this feel worth chasing while it is happening instead of years later.

Collector Notes

Base Set cards from 2024 Topps Chrome Tennis are easy enough to track down, but the Aqua Refractor parallel numbered to 399 puts this firmly in harder-to-find territory without needing an autograph or a one-of-one to feel special. Card #82 slots into the broader Fritz run across the set, which also includes his Clay Court Refractor and standard base parallels, so this one is a nice middle ground between affordable and genuinely scarce for anyone trying to build out a full Fritz chrome run.

I don't have this one yet, and with Fritz playing this well through a Basel semifinal week, it jumped up my list fast. It is sitting on my needs list in the Collectiblz app now, so if anyone out there has an extra copy of 034/399 floating around, you know where to find me.

Display Tips

For a numbered refractor like this, I always recommend stepping up from a penny sleeve. An Ultra Pro 35pt Toploader keeps the surface protected from edge dings, and if you want it on display rather than in a box, the Ultra Pro Magnetic One-Touch holder shows off that aqua shimmer without a screw-down frame blocking the light.
