McDonald's Happy Meal Shopkins 2015 - Curly: The Curliest Little Beauty in the Wave

McDonald's Happy Meal Shopkins 2015 - Curly: The Curliest Little Beauty in the Wave

Welcome to the Tiniest, Most Shoppin-Adorable Corner of Kids' Meal Collecting 🍟

If you spent any time in a McDonald's drive-through line during the winter of 2015, there is a very good chance you heard the words "Can I get a Happy Meal? With a Shopkins toy?" at least a dozen times. The McDonald's Happy Meal Shopkins wave - running from late December 2015 into January 2016 - was one of those rare promotions that genuinely caught parents and kids off guard with just how well it landed. Today I want to zero in on one specific character from the wave: Curly, a Beauty category Shopkin with a look that's equal parts sweet and collectible.

What Makes Curly Stand Out in the Beauty Category

Curly falls into the Beauty subset of the McDonald's Shopkins assortment. In the full lineup, the Beauty group includes Curly, Polly Polish, Kelsey Compact, Mia Mirror, Rhonda Ring, Penelope Perfume, and Tiara - with Kelsey Compact, Tiara, and Penelope Perfume landing as Ultra Rares in the blind bag portion of the promotion. Curly's look is immediately recognizable: styled hair swirls, a compact form, and that cheerful Shopkins facial expression that made the whole franchise such a runaway hit in 2015.

In terms of size, these Happy Meal Shopkins are noticeably larger than their retail counterparts. That was a deliberate design choice - at Happy Meal scale, the pieces are easier to handle, safer for a wide age range, and much simpler to notice if they end up rolling under a car seat. The plastic feel is solid and smooth, with molded color throughout rather than painted detail. No small add-on parts, no fragile accessories. What you get is a durable, single-piece character that holds up to real use.

The Happy Meal Shopkins are scaled up from the standard retail size, which actually makes them easier to appreciate as individual characters. You can actually see Curly's hair detail without needing a magnifying glass.

The Full 2015 McDonald's Shopkins Wave

Each Happy Meal toy from this promotion came with a shopping basket or bag and two Shopkins - one visible and one hidden in a blind bag format. The full assortment was organized into themed categories, giving collectors a clear framework for completing the set:

  • Dresses: Bella La Ball, Tutusweet, Judy Jumper, Suzie School Skirt
  • Purses: Carrie Clutch, Rebecca Bag, Wendy Wristlet, Katie Clasp, Heidi Handbag, Connie Coin Bag, Duffa
  • Beauty: Curly, Polly Polish, Kelsey Compact, Mia Mirror, Rhonda Ring, Penelope Perfume, Tiara
  • Shoes: Teenie, Sneaky Sally, Jennifer Rayne, Prommy, Kitty Flats, Sneaky Wedge, Flippa Flops
  • Rare: Glitter-finish versions of select characters including Tutusweet, Teenie, Suzie School Skirt, Bella La Ball, Rhonda Ring, Flippa Flops, Prommy, Kitty Flats, and Judy Jumper
  • Ultra Rare: Metallic silver and gold versions of Tiara, Kelsey Compact, and Penelope Perfume

The full run included 16 visible Shopkins and 40 hidden variants, making the blind bag mechanic a significant driver of repeat Happy Meal visits. Rare versions carried a glittery finish, while the three Ultra Rares came in metallic silver and gold - a genuinely appealing chase for young collectors at the time.

Play Value vs. Display Value

These McDonald's Shopkins sit in an interesting middle ground. For kids, Curly and the rest of the Beauty group have obvious play value - they are just the right size for small hands, the characters are friendly and expressive, and the team-based organization encouraged kids to sort and arrange their finds. The basket accessory adds a small layer of play functionality that standard retail Shopkins also leaned into heavily.

For adult collectors, the interest is different. The McDonald's Shopkins occupy a specific moment in promo toy history - 2015 was peak Shopkins mania, and the Happy Meal partnership captured that energy at exactly the right moment. Finding a complete set, especially with loose pieces in solid condition and ideally with the accompanying collector's guide insert, is the real goal now. Curly in particular, being a non-rare Beauty character, is more accessible than the Ultra Rares but still part of a wave that has genuine nostalgic resonance for the millennial parent and collector crowd.

The large-format plastic holds up well over time. No paint chips to worry about - the color is molded into the piece. These are sturdy, low-maintenance display pieces that sit nicely in shallow bins, shadow boxes, or organized by category on a small shelf.

Collector Notes: Completing the Wave

A full loose set of the 2015 McDonald's Shopkins is a satisfying chase. The visible characters are relatively common, while the glitter Rares and the three metallic Ultra Rares are the pieces that take patience to find. Curly being part of the regular Beauty rotation means she surfaces regularly in lots, but finding her in clean, unplayed condition with no scuffs is worth the extra look. The collector's guide insert - a four-panel card that came with the toy - is often missing from loose pieces and is worth seeking out if you want a truly complete display.

Grouping the full Beauty category together makes for a strong display unit. Curly, Polly Polish, Mia Mirror, and the rest of the Beauty group tell a coherent little story, and the scale difference from standard retail Shopkins makes the McDonald's versions stand out clearly on a shelf that mixes both formats.

I have this one on my need list in the Collectiblz app - still tracking down a few of the Beauty category pieces in clean condition. If you are managing your own Happy Meal collection, the app is a great way to keep tabs on what you have, what you need, and what condition each piece is in.

Curly might be one of the smaller characters in the Shopkins universe, but in the context of the 2015 McDonald's wave, she is part of something genuinely fun and historically interesting. Track down the full Beauty set and see for yourself. ✨
